i just switched to mac from pc and am for the most part very happy. the only issue (but it's a BIG one!) is that I find the mac mail program INCREDIBLY limited. outlook (although a heavy app) is MUCH superior, allowing you to change subject headings of received mail (great for sorting and little conspicuous notes to yourself), formatting your messages with all the benefits of word and having a calendar and address book all in within one umbrella (ctrl.1,2,3 toggles between them).
this is definitely the one area where apple should be looking to microsoft for inspiration.
I use Apple Mail because of its integration with Address Book, iCal, iPhone, Omnifocus, Daylite, and Spotlight. I use IMAP through Gmail, and I went through hell trying to "fix" Mail.app. I did make some progress, but came to the conclusion that Apple Mail doesn't get along well with Gmail's IMAP. I configured email from my web server to see if it helped, but came to the conclusion that Mail's IMAP support purely sucks.
For instance, if I move an email out of my inbox in Gmail while Apple Mail is running, I can press "get mail" a million times and it will continue to show that message in my inbox. I have to quit and restart Mail to make that email disappear like it should. I've also had a ton of issues with loading IMAP folders, but I've managed to solve that, for the most part. I think Mail is still a pretty slick app, but I still prefer Gmail when possible. Google Gears for Gmail is coming out soon, so that may be a turning point. I'll use Mail to record notes about clients in Daylite, and to add tasks to Omnifocus, but emailing is Gmail's domain. Plus, Firefox extensions add a lot of additional functionality to Gmail. My Gmail includes secure access, HTML signatures, a GTD-style organization system, and much more. Let's see Safari do that. If we're talking about Apple programs that suck, let's start the conversation with MobileMe. I can't believe I considered paying for that piece of trash.
I agree. Mail might be a little limited, but its integration with other Mac apps is by far the best. The alternative I have considered is going totally Google - GMail, calendar, etc.
